Request a SharePoint File Share Site

Tags staff faculty

A SharePoint File Share site is used to store files for a department or group. (In essence, it is a group OneDrive as the the Site Lists, Notebook, and Pages features are all disabled, identical in form and function to your individual OneDrive but configured for multiple users and easy to maintain as group membership changes.) The site is unique because permissions are handled through the group management tool and not directly through the site (by request). To request a site for your department or campus group, submit a service request from the TechHelp Service Catalog. Have the following information ready for your request:

  • Site owners name:
  • Site owners NetID:
  • Desired site name:
  • Desired site web address (e.g., https:/tu.sharepoint.com/sites/...)
    • The URL should end in a shortened version of the site title if possible
  • Type of site:

Other SharePoint Site Types:

  • A SharePoint Team Site is a location where a group of colleagues can share information and work collaboratively on projects from any device with internet access. This site type includes a group of webpages, a document library, lists for data management and web parts for organization. Unlike a File Share, permissions for a Team Site are managed within SharePoint.
