Look Up System Information on a Mac

Mac computers store unique system information, including serial numbers, computer number, operating system version, etc. OTS or Apple will need this information when servicing a Mac computer. You can access the system information in one of two ways.

Access Mac system info when logged in

  1. Select the Apple menu in the upper left corner of the screen.
  2. Select About this Mac. In the resulting window, the Processor and Memory information is displayed.
  3. Select the System Report button to launch the System Profile window; here, you will find detailed information including the Model Number, Hardware and Network details. The computer name is displayed in the Status Bar at the bottom of the window.

Access Mac system info when not logged in

  1. On the main Mac login window, the computer name is displayed below the words Mac OS X.
  2. For additional information, continue selecting the text below the words Mac OS X and the following information will display in this order:
    • Computer Name
    • OS Version
    • Build
    • Serial Number*
    • IP Address
    • Network Accounts Available - A red dot next to Network Accounts Available indicates that the Mac is not connected to the network. Check to verify network cables are plugged in.

*The serial number will be blank if the motherboard has been replaced. For instructions on locating the serial number, open Find the serial number of your Apple product.
