Use Jamf Self Service to Install and Update Mac Applications

Jamf Self Service distributes software to TU Macs, providing standard university application packages for faculty and staff to install on demand. The Jamf Self Service app is available on all faculty/staff Macs. Classroom and lab Macs generally don't advertise apps in Self Service. Contact the college or department staff with questions about these Macs.

Self Service is only available on university Macs. It's unavailable for iPad, iPod Touch, iPhones or personal Macs.

Check Self Service requirements

  • The Jamf client app must be installed and running.
  • You must connect to the TU wired network or a wireless network (on or off-campus). The software packages included info on which network connection is required for installation.

Verify that Self Service is installed on your Mac

Install software packages

Watch this brief Self Service video that demonstrates software package installations. (The video refers to Casper Self Service, but it's now called Jamf Self Service.)

  1. Plug the Mac into an electrical outlet. If using a laptop, leave the lid open. Closing the lid disconnects the network causing installations to fail.

  2. Quit any running applications, and don't do any work on the Mac until installations are completed.

  3. Open Applications and select Self Service. If it doesn't display among the applications, contact the Faculty/Staff Help Center (410-704-5151) to report that Self Service is not installed on your TU Mac.

  4. In the Self Service side panel, select a category (e.g., Academic, Adobe, etc.) to display available packages.

  5. Find the desired application and select InstallDon't install apps unless you know their purpose and need them. If a package description window pops up, carefully read it for installation requirements. If you choose not to run the package, select the grey X in the top right of the description window to cancel the installation.

  6. To proceed, select Install. When the installation has been completed, the status bar will display no information, and you can resume work on the Mac.

  7. Quit the Self Service app when done.
