Adding Content with Visual Editor
The WordPress editor has two tabs: Visual and Text.
- Visual: Enter content like in an email editor.
- Text: Edit HTML code (recommended for those with HTML experience).
Toolbar: Contains common formatting tools. Use the Toolbar Toggle button to show/hide the second line of tools.
Keyboard Shortcuts:
- Line break: Shift+Enter
- Copy: Ctrl+C (Windows), Cmd+C (Mac)
- Cut: Ctrl+X (Windows), Cmd+X (Mac)
- Select all: Ctrl+A (Windows), Cmd+A (Mac)
- Undo: Ctrl+Z (Windows), Cmd+Z (Mac)
- Redo: Ctrl+Y (Windows), Cmd+Y (Mac)
Adding Images & Media
Media includes images, audio, video, and documents. Once uploaded to your Media Library, inserting them into your page or post is easy:
- Add an Image:
- Place the cursor where you want the image.
- Select the Add Media tool.
- If the image is in your Media Library, select it. If not, upload it first.
- Insert an Image:
- Select the image thumbnail.
- Enter Alt Text for accessibility.
- Click Insert Into Page.
- Attachment Details:
- Displays file name, date, dimensions, URL, title, caption, Alt Text, description, alignment, link, and size.
- Position, Edit, and Delete Images:
- Use the toolbar to align, edit, or remove images.
- Resize images by dragging the handles.
Admin Toolbar & Save and Publish
The WordPress Admin Toolbar provides quick access to commonly used features when signed in. It is not visible to site visitors.
Toolbar Features:
- WordPress Icon: Links to support and community forums.
- My Sites: Access your site(s).
- Site Name: Toggle between Dashboard and site view, access editing features.
- Comment Icon: View and moderate comments.
- New: Quickly create posts, media, links, pages, and users.
- Follow: Add the current site to your Followed Sites list.
Save and Publish:
- Select the Update button in the Publish section.
- View changes by selecting the View Page link.
- Use your browser's Back button to return to editing.
- Ensure Visibility is set to Public and follow the steps in "Making your WordPress Site Live" to make your site publicly viewable.
Dashboard & Instructional Videos
Use the Admin Toolbar at the top of your WordPress page to switch between your Dashboard and page view by selecting your site name.
Options:
- Dashboard: View summary info for your site.
- Posts: Create and update blog posts, categories, and tags.
- Media: Upload and manage images, documents, and files.
- Links: Add links to be displayed on your site.
- Pages: Create and maintain pages.
- Comments: Manage comments, reply, or mark as spam.
- Appearance: Customize your site's look with themes, widgets, and menus.
- Plugins: Browse and activate plugins.
- Users: Manage site users and their roles.
- Tools: Import/export content and create backups.
- Settings: Configure site name, tagline, fonts, visibility, etc.
- Plugin Menus: Access plugin configuration pages.
- Subscriptions: Manage site subscribers.
- Collapse Menu: Collapse the menu panel to save space.
Instructional Videos
Default Student Template
TU provides a default template (based on the WP theme Author) as a starting point. You can choose from over 300 themes to better express your individuality. The default template includes four customizable pages, but you can add or remove pages and features as needed.
Areas:
- Title: Your page and site title, likely your name.
- Subtitle: Additional info like your major or skills.
- Home: Link to your Home/Welcome page.
- About Me: Link to your About Me page, ideal for a resume or bio.
- Updates: Link to your Updates page.
- Portfolio: Link to your e-portfolio page.
- Site Search Widget: Allows visitors to search your site.
- Subscribe by Email Widget: Allows visitors to receive email alerts.
- Edit: Button to enter Edit mode and add content.
Visit Your Site & Posts vs. Pages
Visit Your Site:
- From your Dashboard, hover over My Sites.
- Hover over your site name in the drop-down menu.
- Select Visit Site in the fly-out menu.
Posts vs. Pages:
- Posts: Blog entries listed in reverse-chronological order.
- Pages: Static content that changes infrequently.
