Towson University's NetID Management system (http://www.towson.edu/netid) uses SMS text messages to send one-time passcodes to NetID holders who need to reset a forgotten or expired password. This service is available to faculty, staff, students and certain guest NetIDs as one of several options for performing self-service password resets.
Enrollment to this service is optional. Text messages are sent to whichever mobile phone (personal or Towson-owned) that an individual chooses and confirm possession of. To enroll and opt-in to this service, follow the links at the NetID Management page (http://www.towson.edu/netid). By enrolling, you are agreeing to receive one-time password resets via text message on your mobile device. Message and data rates may apply. Please contact your wireless provider for more information.
Once you enroll in this service and initiate a password reset request, you will receive a text message with a verification code, which must be provided to the NetID Management system in order to reset your password. At no time will Towson University send any links, pictures, videos, or other media to you for the purpose of resetting your password. TU will not send you any text messages for purpose of resetting your password without a self-service password reset request initiated by you or others for your NetID. If you receive unsolicited codes for the purpose of self-service password reset or links pretending to be self-service password reset links, then please contact the Office of Technology Services (OTS) immediately at 410-704-5151 as they may be indicators of intrusion attempts against your account.
Once you have enrolled in this service, you may opt-out of this service at any time. To stop the messages coming to your phone from this service, you can log in to the NetID Management system (http://www.towson.edu/netid) and delete your recovery phone number. You may also text the word "STOP" in reply to text messages you receive from the system -- you will then receive a one-time opt-out confirmation text message. After that, you will receive no future messages. However, TU recommends using the NetID Management system to simply clear your recovery phone number since you won't be able to reenroll again with the same number without OTS intervention if you texted the word “STOP.“
Password reset codes sent via SMS may not be delivered to you if your phone is not in range of a transmission site, or if sufficient network capacity is not available at a particular time. Even within a coverage area, factors beyond the control of your wireless carrier may interfere with message delivery, including the customer's equipment, terrain, proximity to buildings, foliage, and weather. By using this service, you acknowledge that SMS password reset codes may not be timely received and that your wireless carrier does not guarantee that alerts will be delivered. Carriers are not responsible for the late delivery of messages.
In event that an SMS text message is not available or not received in time to perform a successful password reset, you may choose to use one of the alternative methods for password reset, available at the NetID Management page (http://www.towson.edu/netid). These include sending a password reset code to your registered recovery email address, or using your established security questions and answers. If those methods don't work, you may contact the Office of Technology Services (OTS) at 410-704-5151.
