Top Tip
Always go through MyTU (mytu.towson.edu) to launch Blackboard. Any other way you access Blackboard will be slow to load.
Getting Started with Blackboard
- Log in using your TU NetID username and password. Take a few minutes early on to get comfortable navigating the system.
- Click into each course to explore the syllabus, content and course structure. Each instructor is different - see how your instructor organizes materials (by week, topic, or module).
- Enable notifications. Adjust your settings to get email or mobile alerts for important announcements and deadline changes.
- Check Blackboard frequently for announcements, assignments, and feedback.
- See more best practices for using Blackboard.
Stay Organized
- Check the Calendar regularly. Assignments, tests, and due dates appear here automatically, and you can switch between daily or monthly views to plan ahead.
- Look for popup announcements. Instructors frequently post updates, clarifications, or deadline changes here.
- Pin important courses. “Favorite” courses so they appear at the top of your course list.
Manage Assignments, Tests and Submissions
- Submit assignments and view grades directly within your courses.
- Use a stable internet connection. Avoid switching tabs or losing connection during a test, especially if it is timed.
- Save answers frequently. Even if auto-save is enabled, clicking save manually is a good habit.
- Always preview before submitting. Blackboard lets you review files before hitting submit. This helps catch missing pages or wrong files.
- Look for submission confirmation. After submitting, you should see a confirmation message or email. No confirmation usually means it didn’t go through.
Track Grades and Feedback
- Review feedback, not just grades. In Ultra, instructors often leave inline comments or overall feedback. This is key for improving future work.
Use Blackboard on Mobile
- Download the Blackboard app. It’s great for checking announcements, grades, and messages.
- Avoid making major submissions on mobile. Uploading assignments or taking tests is safer on a laptop or desktop.
Accessibility and Learning Tools
- Use Ally, Blackboard’s accessibility tool, for alternative formats. Download content as audio, tagged PDFs, or other formats that suit your learning style. Learn more about Accessibility in Blackboard.
- Adjust document view settings. Using zoom view, full screen, and downloaded versions can make reading easier.
When Something Goes Wrong
- Try the quick fix: Log out and log back in. This solves most simple glitches.
- Document it: If it's still broken, take a screenshot of the issue and note the exact time it happened.
- Reach out: Contact your instructor immediately to let them know.
- Get technical help: Contact the OTS Tech Support Desk or Blackboard@towson.edu if needed. See all support options at towson.edu/blackboard.
