Windows Login Error Messages

These are common Windows login error messages, causes, and solutions for TU owned computers.

Error Message Cause and resolution

The password is incorrect.  Please try again.

The username or password is incorrect.  Please try again.

Invalid credentials, delaying next attempt

Be sure you are using your NetID and your password is correct.  Please reset your password, if necessary.

If you are using a local account, be sure to use a dot and backslash (the slash typically above the Enter key) before the username  (e.g. .\localaccount).

The referenced account is currently locked out and may not be logged on to.

If this is a NetID, this means your account is locked out due to multiple bad passwords within a short time.  Either wait and it will unlock itself, or call the Technology Support Desk at 410-704-5151 and we can unlock it for you and investigate where lockouts are coming from.  If this happens frequently, it is often caused by a phone, laptop, or tablet that keeps trying an old password.  To resolve this, forget tu-secure on all mobile devices and reconnect.

There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request

This usually indicates a network issue.  Local accounts and NetIDs that have cached passwords will be able to log in.  Check your network connection.  If you are using a laptop, plug it into a network port before trying again.

The User Profile service failed the sign-in.  User profile cannot be loaded.

This indicates that Windows can't create a profile. NetIDs that have logged into that computer before may be able to successfully log in.  This is frequently caused by low hard drive space.

The trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain failed

The computer isn't on the domain.  This sometimes happens when computers aren't connected to the TU network for long periods.  Log a TechHelp ticket and include the TU Tag number.  We will send someone to rejoin your computer to the domain.  If you have a laptop, you may take it to the Technology Support Desk on the main level of Cook, and we can resolve this while you wait.
