If using a TU-owned computer, the VPN application should already be installed. If this is the case, select the Windows Search button beside the Start button and enter/select Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client. Then skip to Step 3 under Connecting to the VPN below. The VPN Client can only be installed on your computer if it is connected physically to TU’s Ethernet or via the TU-Secure wireless network.
Install the VPN client
- Open your preferred web browser and navigate to https://vpnc.towson.edu.
- Enter your NetID into the username field and then enter your password. Select the login button to continue.
- A warning message will appear. Select the continue button.

- The AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client Download window will appear. Select the Download for Windows
button.
- The file will begin to download. Once the download has finished, double-click the file.
- If an "Open File - Security Warning" dialog box appears, select "Run."
- The Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client Setup Wizard will appear. Follow the steps to finish the
installation.
Connect to the VPN
- Once the installation has finished, select the Windows Search button beside the Start button and type Cisco
AnyConnect.
- Choose "Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client" from the matches that will appear.
Note: Alternatively, you may select the Start menu, then the Cisco folder, and then select the Cisco AnyConnect
Secure Mobility Client icon.
- The Cisco AnyConnect client will launch in the lower right corner of your desktop.
- First-time users must type vpnc.towson.edu in the text field beneath "Ready to connect."
- Select the connect button.

- The Towson University Authenticated Login page will appear. Enter your Username (NetID) and Password
and then select Login.
- Faculty and staff members will be prompted to authenticate with Duo.
- A warning message (figure 1) will appear. Select the accept button to continue connecting to the VPN.
- Note: if the VPN hangs at Establishing VPN Connection and you get error messages, you may need to call OTS at 410-704-5151 to receive access.
- In the lower-right corner of the screen, you will receive a message confirming the VPN is connected.
Disconnect from the VPN
- Select the Show hidden icons button (^) in the bottom right-hand corner of your desktop.
- Select the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client button.
- The client will open. Select the "Disconnect" button.
- Select the "Close" button at the top right of the window.
Reconnect to the VPN
- Select the Show hidden icons button (^) in the bottom right-hand corner of your desktop.
- Select the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client button.
- The client will open. Select the "Connect" button.
- Enter your Username (NetID) and Password in the appropriate fields and then select the OK button.
- A warning message (figure 1) will appear. Select the accept button to continue connecting to the VPN.
