Troubleshoot Unavailable Websites

Summary

[Faculty & Staff] Websites that produce errors such as 404 Not Found or 504 Service Unavailable or fail to load at all may indicate the site is down, a network cable is loose, or the campus network is experiencing a problem.

Body

Websites that produce errors such as 404 Not Found or 504 Service Unavailable or that fail to load at all may indicate the site is down, a network cable is loose or the campus network is experiencing a problem.

Troubleshoot

  1. Try multiple common websites (towson.edu, google.com, cnn.com, etc.). If one site works while another doesn't, this indicates an issue with a particular site and not the network connection.
  2. Refresh the page.
  3. If no websites will load, restart the web browser and try again.
  4. Try another web browser (e.g., if using Edge, try Firefox or Chrome).
  5. Check the network cable connection at the wall or floor box near the lectern; a loose or unplugged cable will affect network connectivity. In some classrooms, these connections may be concealed beneath the lectern. If this is the case, move on to the next step below; do not attempt to move the lectern.
  6. Restart the computer.
    • Windows: Sign out. From the Sign In screen, click the power icon in the lower right and select Restart.
    • Apple: Click the Apple menu icon and select Restart.
  7. If the above steps fail to resolve the issue, report it by calling 4-TECH at 410-704-8324 or using the CCLT chat service. Widespread network outages or local issues may take some time to resolve; plan to continue teaching without online resources.
