Troubleshoot Unavailable Websites

Summary

[Faculty & Staff] Websites that produce errors such as 404 Not Found or 504 Service Unavailable or fail to load at all may indicate the site is down, a network cable is loose, or the campus network is experiencing a problem.

Body

When a website displays an error (e.g., 404 Not Found, 504 Service Unavailable) or fails to load, it could mean the site itself is down, a network cable is loose, or there is a campus network issue.

Troubleshoot

  1. Test multiple websites
    • Try commonly used websites (towson.edu, google.com, cnn.com, etc.).
    • If one site works while another doesn't, this indicates an issue with a particular site and not the network connection.
  2. Refresh the page.
    • Press Ctrl + R (Windows) or Command + R (Mac) to reload
  3. Restart the Browser
    • Close the browser completely and reopen it.
  4. Try another web browser (e.g., if using Edge, try Firefox or Chrome).
  5. Check the network cable connection
    • Ensure the cable is securely connected at the wall or floor box near the lectern;  a loose or unplugged cable will affect network connectivity.
    •  In some classrooms, cables may be hidden beneath the lectern. Do not attempt to move the lectern—if the connection is inaccessible, continue to the next step.
  6. Restart the computer.
    • Windows: Sign out. From the Sign In screen, click the power icon in the lower right and select Restart.
    • Apple: Click the Apple menu icon and select Restart.
  7. If the above steps fail to resolve the issue, contact support.
    • Report it by calling 4-TECH at 410-704-8324 or using the CCLT chat service. Widespread network outages or local issues may take some time to resolve; plan to continue teaching without online resources.
