Installing an SPSS Commuter License on Laptops

On your university-owned Mac and Windows laptop, to access SPSS when you travel or are not plugged into the university wired network; follow the procedures below to grant yourself a temporary Commuter License. The commuter license will reside on your laptop and allow access to SPSS for the time period granted that you will not be plugged into the university wired network.

Requirements

SPSS must be installed on your laptop computer before you can install a commuter license. For installations see the SPSS Installation Procedures section at http://www.towson.edu/technology/facultystaff/hardwaresoftware/software/statistical.html.

Below are commuter license procedures for Mac and Windows.

Mac Commuter License Instructions

On-Campus 

1. Plug your laptop into the wired campus network

2. Navigate to Applications> IBM > SPSS > Statistics >

3. Double Click “Commuter Utility.app “

4. In the Commuter Utility window, select IBM SPSS Statistics, the SPSS version and you are running> 

5. Enter the number of days that you need the license validated in the Duration box. You can choose a maximum of 30 days.

6. Select the “Check Out” button

   • After Checkout, you will now see a red checkmark next to the license amount decreased by 1 (for the current day)

   • You can now use SPSS without being plugged into the Towson network

7. When you return to the Towson network, plug the computer into the university wired network

8. Open the SPSS Commuter Utility.

9. Select the IBM SPSS Statistics version you are running and select the “Check In” button. The license will be returned to the license pool and is available for others to use.

   • Note: when the duration of days for your license expires, SPSS will no longer run. You will need to renew the license (below)

10. To renew your license, return to the university; plug your laptop into the wired campus network or use the Off-Campus procedures below and repeat the steps above.

Off-Campus

If you are not on campus, you will need to use Virtual Private Network (VPN) to securely connect to the university network to obtain or renew a commuter license on the Mac. Once VPN is running on your computer, follow the Mac Commuter License Instructions above.

Windows Commuter License Instructions

On-Campus 

Plug your laptop into the wired campus network

1. In Windows, open Start Menu> Programs and choose IBM SPSS Inc.

2. Select IBM SPSS Statistics

3. Select the File > Manage License

4. In the Commuter Utility window, select IBM SPSS Statistics ​​​​​​<SPSS version you are running>

5. Enter the number of days that you need the license validated in the Duration box. You can choose a maximum of 30 days

6. Select the Check Out button.

   • After Checkout, you will now see a red checkmark and the license amount decreased by 1 (for the current day) You can now use SPSS without being plugged into the Towson network

7. When you return to the Towson network, plug the computer into the university wired network

8. Open the SPSS Commuter License program.

9. Select IBM SPSS Statistics and select the Check-in button.

   • The license will be returned to the license pool and is available for others to use.

   • Note: when the duration of days for your license expires, SPSS will no longer run. You will need to renew the license

10. To renew your license, return to the university; plug your laptop into the wired campus network or use the Off-Campus procedures below and repeat the steps above.

Off-Campus
