Make and Answer Calls on Your Cisco 79 Series IP Phone

Learn the basic operations of your Cisco IP phone, including making calls to numbers both on and off campus, answering calls, putting calls on hold and using the redial feature.

Call numbers both on and off campus

Use the handset for on-campus calls

1. Lift the handset and dial the 5-digit extension using the keypad. Your call will be placed, and you will hear it ringing through the handset.
2. Alternatively, you may dial the 5-digit extension first and then lift the handset. You will hear it ringing through the handset.
    

Use the handset for off-campus calls

1. Lift the handset and press 6 on the keypad. You will hear an unusual dial tone.
2. Dial the off-campus phone number. Your call will be placed, and you will hear it ringing through the handset.
3. Alternatively, you may press 6 on the keypad and then dial the off-campus phone number. Lift the handset, and you will hear it ringing through the handset.
    

Use the New Call softkey for on-campus calls 

1. Press the New Call Softkey on your phone. Your speaker will engage automatically, the Speaker button will light, and you will hear a dial tone.
2. Dial the 5-digit extension on the keypad. Your call will be placed, and you will hear it ringing. You may either pick up the handset or use the speaker phone.
    

Use the New Call softkey for off-campus calls

1. Press the New Call Softkey on your phone. Your speaker will engage automatically, the Speaker button will light, and you will hear a dial tone.
2. Press 6 on the keypad. You will hear an unusual dial tone.
3. Dial the off-campus phone number on the keypad. Your call will be placed, and you will hear it ringing. You may either pick up the handset or use the speaker phone.
    

Use the navigation buttons or the Dial softkey to make calls

1. Use the keypad to dial the 5-digit extension for an on-campus call or press 6 and dial the off-campus phone number.
   
   
    
2. Press the √ button (nested in the middle of the Navigation buttons as highlighted above) on your phone or press the Dial softkey.
3. Your speaker will engage automatically, the Speaker button will light, and you will hear a dial tone. You may either pick up the handset or use the speaker phone.

Answer a call

When your phone rings, you may answer it in one of three different ways:

• Pick up the handset.
• Press the Speaker button.
• Press the Answer softkey.

Place a call on hold

1. While on a call, press the Hold softkey.
2. Your softkey options will change, and a blinking orange and white icon will display beside the extension on your display.
3. Return to the phone call either by pressing the Resume softkey or by pressing the flashing green line button.

Redial a number

You may redial a previously dialed number or a previously received number in any of the following ways:

• Press the Redial softkey. The last number you called will be dialed.
   
• Press the first digit of the phone number you wish to redial. A list of numbers will display on your screen. These are received calls.
  • Use the ▲ ▼ navigation buttons to select the appropriate number.
  • Press the Dial softkey or the √ navigation button.
     
• Press the directories button (open book). A list of options will display under Directories.
  • Use the ▲ ▼ navigation buttons to move to either Missed Calls, Received Calls or Placed Calls. Then, press the Select softkey.
    • Alternatively, press the number on your keypad associated with your desired selection (for example, press the 1 on your keypad to choose Missed Calls). A list of numbers will display.
  • Use the ▲ ▼ navigation buttons to select the appropriate number.
  • Press the Dial softkey or the √ navigation button.

Answer multiple calls on a single phone line

If you are on a call and your phone rings, you may pick up the other call, and the original call will be put on hold, automatically. You may then switch between the two calls.

1. If a second call rings while you are on a call, press the ▼ navigation button to select the second call.
2. Press the Answer softkey or press the green line button to answer the second call. The first call will automatically be put on hold.
3. After hanging up the second call, press the Resume softkey to return to the first call.
