Find a Computer's Name, OS Version and TU Tag

This document describes locating the Computer Name, Operating System and TU Tag of a TU-owned computer.

Computer name

Mac

To find the computer name:

  1. Open the Apple Menu.
  2. Select About this Mac.
  3. Select System Report. The computer name (bottom left), operating system and installed memory will be displayed.
     

Windows 10

To find the computer name:

  1. Right-click the Computer icon on the Desktop.
  2. Select Properties. The computer name is displayed in the middle of the System Properties window.

Alternatively, you can enter Towson System Information in the Windows Search box. This will display the computer name, TU Tag, make and model, serial number and installed memory. 

Operating system (OS)

Mac

To find the MacOS:

  1. Open the Apple Menu.
  2. Select About this Mac. The current OS X version will be displayed.
     

Windows 10

To find the OS, follow the same procedures above for Computer Name.

Alternatively,

  1. Press the Windows logo key and the R key (Win+R).
  2. When the Run dialog appears, type winver and select OK. The Windows 10 version will be displayed (e.g., 1607 or 20H2.)

TU Tag

The TU Tag (example pictured below) is affixed to the computer's top, back, sides or bottom.

If there is no TU tag on the computer, contact the Property Records department at propertyrecords@towson.edu to arrange to put a tag on the computer.
