Content in Alternative Accessible Formats

Summary

Alternative formats allow students the option to convert documents to other file formats without having to provide multiple files within the course

Body

Ally is an accessibility checker within Blackboard. It also provides course content in alternative formats for students. Students may convert documents to audio and other file formats without the instructor having to provide multiple files within the course.

Accessing alternative formats

  1. Access your Blackboard course and locate the content you wish to view in an alternative format.
  2. Select the Ally icon (an uppercase A with a down arrow) next to the file you wish to view in an alternative format.
  3. In the pop-up window, choose your format:
    • HTML: View the content in your browser or on mobile devices.
    • ePub: Read the content as an e-book on an iPad or other e-book reader.
    • Electronic Braille: Creates a BRF file that can be read on a refreshable Braille display or other Braille reading devices.
    • Audio: Creates an MP3 version of the content for you to listen to.
    • Tagged PDF: Creates a structured PDF file for use with assistive technologies such as a screen reader.
  4.  Select Download.
  5. Open or Save the file.
