A maildrop is a group mailbox assigned to a TU department or organization. Maildrops allow an owner to send mail messages from the maildrop's email address rather than from their personal email address. Maildrops are meant for faculty, staff and student employees. Students can access a maildrop without having an Exchange address to Outlook on their computer.
Access your maildrop via a web browser
You can access your maildrop outside of the Outlook desktop app through your web browser.
- Open your preferred web browser and select the address bar.
- Enter outlook.office.com/mail/maildropaddress@towson.edu/inbox (substituting your maildrop name for maildropaddress).
- Enter your NetID Username and Password.
- Select Sign in.
Set up maildrop access on a Windows computer
- If Outlook is running, close it.
- Select the Search tool (magnifying glass) in the Windows Taskbar.
- Enter Control Panel in the search box and press Enter.
- Enter Mail in the search box at the upper right corner of the Control Panel window and press Enter.
- Select Mail from the search results to open the Mail Setup box.
- Select Show Profiles. to open the Mail [profiles] box.
- Select Add... to open the New Profile box.
- Enter the name of your maildrop in the Profile Name field and select OK. The Add Account window will open.
- Make sure the Email Account radio button is selected.
- Change the Email Address from your personal address to the maildrop address: maildropaddress@towson.edu
- Leave the Password fields blank and select Next>. Outlook will attempt to discover the configuration. This could take a few minutes.
- Remove the maildrop address from the Sign in prompt and replace it with your Towson University email address.
- Select Next. The Configuring window will indicate when the profile configuration is complete. Select Finish to return to the Mail window.
- Select the profile you just created in the Always use this profile drop-down at the bottom of the window and select OK.
Access your maildrop or another profile on a Windows computer
- Launch Outlook, select the newly created profile from the drop-down list, and select OK.
- When finished, you can close Outlook. When you reopen it later, you can choose between your personal mailbox profile (which may be called “%username%” or “Outlook” or “default”) and your maildrop profile.
